SHOW ME/TELL ME QUESTIONS

At the beginning of your test you get asked 2 questions - 1 SHOW ME and 1 TELL ME question.  When it's a SHOW ME question - you physically have to show how you check something.  If it's a TELL ME question - you just describe how you would check it.

These answers are relevant to the MINI One D 2015 (other vehicles may vary)

TELL ME how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working?

Say you'd turn the lights on to full and walk all the way round the vehicle checking the lights at the front and the back of the car. NO NEED TO GET OUT THE CAR.

SHOW ME how you would check that the direction indicators are working?
No ignition is needed, just switch the hazard warning lights on and walk all the way round the car. Make sure you switch them back off when you get back in the vehicle!

SHOW ME how you check that the horn is working?

Point to the horn and tell him you would test it off road somewhere in a non built up area. You can press the horn.

SHOW ME how you would check that the brakes lights are working?
WITHOUT putting the clutch down press the 'START' button (fuel gauge will light up) then press the brake pedal and say you'd get someone else to check them. If no one is around then you would make use of a reflection somewhere like a window or a garage door. DO NOT START THE ENGINE.

TELL ME how you test your brakes are working before starting a journey?
Say you would test them just as you set off, you should be able to stop as normal and that the car shouldn't pull to one side (like a dodgy shopping trolley). They also shouldn't feel spongy or slack.

TELL ME/SHOW ME how you would check the power assisted steering before starting a journey?

Say you'd be able to tell as soon as you set off as you would be able to move the steering wheel easily and if there was something wrong with it, it would be stiff and difficult to turn. Or if it's a show me - show him by pulling down on the right of the steering wheel whilst at the same time, with clutch down, press the 'START' button - when the engine is on the steering resistance will give and it becomes lighter and easier to turn the wheel.

SHOW ME how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear?

Put your foot down on the foot brake (keep it down!), then take the handbrake off (still keeping the foot brake on!) put the handbrake back on, then take your foot off the foot brake. Also tell him it shouldn't be slack to pull up and that it's best tested on a hill as the car would roll if the handbrake was on and it wasn't working properly!

TELL ME how you would check your tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road?

Say that you'd use a tread gauge and that the minimum tread depth ALLOWED is 1.6mm, across the breadth and right round the circumference of the tyre. There should be no cuts, bulges, glass, nails etc in the tyres.

TELL ME where you'd find the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how tyre pressure should be checked?
Say you find the recommended tyre pressure in the manufacturer's manual /it's on a panel inside the door and that you'd use a reliable pressure gauge when the tyres are cold, i.e. before a journey. Not forgetting to also check the spare in the boot and to refit the valve caps.

SHOW ME how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them. (No need to exit the vehicle)
WITHOUT putting the clutch down press the 'START' button (fuel gauge will light up) Put your headlights on as normal (turn two to the right) Turn on the fog lights (bottom button) & say you'd use them when visibility is reduced to 100 metres or less.

TELL ME how you would know if there was a problem with your Anti lock Braking System (ABS)
Say a yellow warning light (just above your digital speedo, 2nd circle up on the right ) will come on if there is a fault with the ABS.

SHOW ME how you switch your headlights from dipped to main beam & explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst in the car.
WITHOUT putting the clutch down press the 'START' button (fuel gauge will light up) Turn on the lights (twist two the the right) then push the same left lever away from you. Say you'd know they were on as a blue 'jellyfish' light will come on in one of the circles just above your digital speedo.

SHOW ME how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer & wipers.
WITHOUT putting the clutch down press the 'START' button. Pull forward and hold the windscreen wiper lever for a couple of seconds.  After you've let go, it'll stop on it's own accord.

SHOW ME how you would set the demister controls to clear ALL the windows effectively, this should include both front & rear screens.
Set all relevant controls - press the TWO BOX JELLY FISH, that's it! DO NOT PUT THE ENGINE ON. (It'll make more sense once I've shown you where they are in the car)

TELL ME how you make sure the head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
Say the head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of it is at least as high as eye level or top of the ears & as close to the back of the head as comfortable.

UNDER THE BONNET - DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING UNDER HERE - JUST POINT AT IT AND SAY HOW YOU'D CHECK IT!!

Identify where the windscreen wash is and tell me how you would check you have a safe level of windscreen wash?

Point to the windscreen wash and tell him that it should be between the min and max level. Say it should be kept regularly topped up.

Identify where the coolant reservoir is and tell me how you would check you have a safe level of coolant?
Point to the coolant and tell him that it should be checked when the engine is cold and that it should be between the min and max level on the container, around the rim, if difficult to see give the car a gentle rock.

Identify where you would check the oil level and tell how you would check you have a safe level of oil?
Point to the dipstick and tell him that you take the dipstick out, wipe it clean, put it back in, take it out again and the oil level should be between the minimum and maximum marks.

Identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check you have a safe level of brake fluid?

The brake fluid is hidden under the flap on the mini. Point to the brake fluid and tell him that it should be between the minimum and maximum marks, if difficult to see, give the car a gentle rock.

IF/WHEN THE EXAMINER ASKS.......

'HOW OFTEN WOULD YOU CHECK SOMETHING?'

YOU SAY.......

'ONCE A WEEK AND BEFORE A LONG JOURNEY!'
